A long weekend in Belize
/“Last night I dreamt of San Pedro…”
The classic Madonna song, “La Isla Bonita,” plays constantly in my head while we are on the island. Unlike my other travel blogs, this one I am writing while still in the middle of the adventure. In fact, this is my view right now:
Ramon’s Resort. A great place to charter your snorkeling boat.
The sounds of the breeze hitting these trees is intoxicating. Here, the waves crest so far out that there is not a lot of ocean sound, but that’s okay. More than okay. Cue Madonna: “tropical, the island breeze…”
Good Friday: no booze to be gotten on the island. Luckily, we got here on a Thursday & stocked up on our own rum!
While not exactly what I expected, especially on Easter weekend, it is a lovely way to relax on our first post-COVID vaccination vacation. Belize did not require us to be tested upon arrival, but the USA requires a test to get back in. (Ouch!)
What d’ya need to know about coming to this paradise? One: it is easy to get here, especially coming from or connecting through DFW. There is a teeny, tiny plane that takes you over to Ambergrise Caye from the mainland, so if you are scared of such things, take the ferry.
The scene at Palapas is fun. Get the fish fingers.
Two: get comfy with driving or riding in a rented golf cart, which sounds kinda adorable until you drive the roads. Bumps, craters, rocks, you name it, you’ll hit it.
One of many stops on our golf cart-based pub crawl resulted in this beauty. And an ocean view.
Three: the food is awesome. Have the shrimp “dynamite” fish at Blue Water Grill. Order the conch ceviche at Mahogany Bay. Eat breakfast at Pineapple’s.
Four: have a drink out on the dock at The Dive Bar and bask in the breezes.
The Dive Bar’s panty dropper. Hey, I didn’t name it.
Five: pack LIGHT. I brought so many things I didn’t even wear! My best decision was that old-fashionedly named “skort.” Yes. SKORT! I got some adorable ones from Venus, which is a fabulous site for vacation wear. Amazon also has some, but order way up in size for those. Skorts are perfect for a breezy place like San Pedro, ‘cause you get to feel a bit dressy but don’t have to worry about your underpants gettin’ shown to everyone!
Ah, lovely, Belize. We will be back. Someday soon!
