What really goes on when you’re getting…zhuzhed?

Prolly I’m not the only woman who has been asked, what the hell goes on when you’re in the salon chair for so long?

As for myself, I have still been unable to successfully explain what a blowout is and why they’re so important. So, here are a few answers for anyone who asks.

Bottom line is, before we can get to this…

…You gotta go through all the steps first.

Heather Mitchell, my fabulous and talented Dallas hair artist, is a rarity: she does it ALL. Cut, color, style, men, women…

If you’re in Dallas and she can squeeze you in, you should see her.

Heather does balayage on me these days. (Wonder what that is, and if it’s the same thing as ombré? Well, this site does a great job of explaining the difference, and has tips on how to maintain your color.)

Balayage, for me, means sitting in the chair practicing my patience while Heather…paints.

Then there’s the sitting around waiting, looking like this.

sexy, huh?

Finally, you get rinsed. And if you’re like me, for some reason you take an unflattering selfie:

then the blowout

followed by rollers for that bouncy big hair look.

One great thing about Heather, she doesn’t push products on you, so when she recommends something, you listen. This L’Oreal hair stuff is great because it keeps the cream and the oil separate in the bottle, and when you squeeze it out it combines for the best formula for soft and silky hair. Hint: it’s not just for curls. She used it before the blowout this day. And I bought some immediately. Then there’s a bit more sitting around, waiting for the rollers to cool.

In fact, there’s so much sitting-aroudn time, I reached for my lip gloss* for even more zhuzhing,

and Heather snapped this picture.

*MAC Nymphette. Don’t worry; it isn’t as bright pink as it looks in the photos on Ulta.com. It’s more golden/light pinky/sparkly perfection.

Finally, the balayaged, blown-out, bouncy golden blonde perfection:

A bit of hairspray, and all done! Now, all that’s left is to keep it as “pretty as possible for as long as possible,” (she says as she reaches for a silk hair band)…🤞🏻
